Enlarged Prostate (BPH)
Assessment and treatment of difficult urination in men โ from medication to HoLEP.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that becomes common as men age. As the gland grows it narrows the urine passage, making urination slow, frequent or incomplete.
Treatment depends on how much the symptoms affect daily life and whether complications โ retention, infection, stones or kidney strain โ are present.
Signs and symptoms
- Weak or interrupted stream
- Getting up at night to pass urine
- Urgency or a feeling of incomplete emptying
- Sudden inability to pass urine (urinary retention) โ needs urgent care

Common questions
No. BPH is benign. However, prostate cancer can coexist, which is why examination and PSA testing may be advised.
